Singer's Voice Made To Crack
THE .ways of Hollywood daily become more strange. For the role of an actor-tenor in “Music for Madame,” RKO Radio combed the city and finally employed George Shelley on a long-term contract. Singing opposite Nino Martini, Shelley is supposed to have a poor voice and virtually “murders” a song in a scene in the picture. The handsome youth is one of the Pacific Coast’s leading baritones, and has sung many prominent roles in grand and light opera in Los Angeles and San Francisco, so to make the singer sound untrained, the score was written for a tenor voice. Shelley’s voice had to be strengthened far beyond its normal range,.and consequently he cracked on a high note, much to the satisfaction of the director, John Blystone.
