Governor Of The Isle Of Wight
Princess Beatrice has been Governorof the Isle of Wight for 41 years. The gift of an organ as an 89th birthday present to her by the people of the Isle of Wight is a recognition of the many duties she has performed during her term of governorship. This office, which is one of the oldest in the country, was taken over by the Princess after the death of her husband, Prince Henry of Battenberg, in 1896. The Princess has given prestige to the office during her long governorship. She has made the title a symbol of public service and social work. Among her many duties as Governor ■there is that of coroner in the island. This work is undertaken by a deputy.
R.S.A. Card Party
The social committee of • the Kilbirnie auxiliary of the Returned Soldiers’ Association entertained a large gathering of card enthusiasts at the weekly card evening held in the clubroom on Tuesday night. Bridge and 500 were the games played and the successful players were Mrs. Cadwallader and Mr. H. Synnott for bridge, and Mrs. Salmond and Mr. J. Cameron for 500. The competitions were won byMrs. J. Strange and Mr. A. F. Averi. The supper was provided by members of the ladies’ committee. It was announced that on Armistice Night, Thursday, November 11, arrangements had been made to entertain the members of the Karori auxiliary. It was also announced that a challenge had been accepted from the Ngaflo auxiliary to play for the “Whiz-bang” Cup on December 5 at Maidstone Park. This cup was presented last cricket season by Mrs. J. McClatchey for annual competition between the Ngaio and Kilbirnie auxiliaries. The Kilbirnie auxiliary was the first winner of the handsome trophy.
Theatre Party
Hie Younger Circle of the EnglishSpeaking Union held a bright theatre and supper party on Saturday night, when more than 30 young people met at the clubrooms before going to the theatre, and later returned for supper and dancing.
Committee members present were Mr. Frank Pears, and Misses Adrienne Beere and Ngairare Blundell, secretary. Also present were Mrs. Blundell, Misses Evelyn Goldsmith, Beatrice Service, Mollie Foster, Winnie Male, Anne Gow, Norma Cannons, Una Phillips, Lorna Ackroyd, Muriel Hunt, Messrs. E. H. Florence, Stan Horne, Neil Instone, Percy Meaken, Carver, Waldo Zander, Jim Gow.
