STAYERS AND THE NEW ZEALAND CUP

Glance Through Pedigrees THE TEST OF STAMINA

(By

The Watcher.)

Provided that the New Zealand Cup is run at a sound puce, aud so made a proper test of stamina, it is usually worth while to give a little time to the study of pedigrees. Non-stayens do win long races, but they are exceptions, aud despite all arguments, certain breids stay while others definitely do not. With the exception of Argentic, Queen of .Song, Hazoor aud Might, there is nothing in the field that hats been tried over a handicap two miles, but Wild Chase has won over a mile and three-quarters in a three-year-old race while several others have successfully negotiated a mile and a half, or ten furlongs. Wild Chase may not stay on the score of his sire, Paper Money, but he has stout Stonyhurst blood on the side of his dam, W.ild Hind, who is by Autumnus— Kirriemuir, by Clanranald—Madowla, by Trenton. Kirriemuir is a sister to Masterpiece, who was narrowly beaten in the New Zealand Cup by Midnight Sun. If a Paper Money is going to win the New Zealand Cup, this is the horse. He is well performed up to a mile and a hall', to say nothing of his St. Leger win. Argentic is by Silverado from Spotlight and is bred to stay on both sides of hL pedigree. He is out of a mare by Nassau from Stardancer, a sister to Warstep, and other good stayers have come from this family. Argentic will stay, though he is now eight years old and has been often expected in big races, only to disappoint. Queen of Song, by Songbird (by Kilbroney) from Differential, by Tractor, has proved herself over the journey by her excellent race in last year's Alelbourne Cup. With her it is a question of form, not stamina. Tauramai, by Paladin (by Polymelus) from Fairform, by Boniform —Satisfaire, by Birkenhead. Staying pedigree and has been successful over a mile and a half in the Great Autumn Handicap and Dunedin Cup. Friesland, by Friarsdale (by Friar Marcus), from Fluency, by Demosthenes —Los Vegas, by Boniform —La Valiere, by Seaton Delaval —Charente, by Nordenfeldt. This family has produced both speed and stamina, of good class. Another branch of the family produced La Moderne. Friesland, on pedigree, should stay any distance. Lowenberg, by Lord Quex —Zarene, by Chief Ruler—Crown Lady, by Crown Imperial ll—Molly. This family goes back to the Multiform foundation, and Lowenberg should stay the distance. Except for his Derby win, however, he has not come up to expectations. Hunting Cat, by Hunting Song—Catalini, by Catmint—Symbolism, by Symington. He should stay, though the Hunting Songs have seldom been tried over a distance ou the flat. He w’as the favourite last year when he broke down. Cerne Abbas, by Lord (Varden (by Hurry On) from Monoxide, by .Boniform —Philomela, by Bezonian —Philomel, by Birkenhead, Another staying pedigree, though the stock of Lord Warden have not distinguished themselves over a distance.

Hazoor, by Black Ronald (by Magpie) from Moana, by Hymestra—Velour, by Birkenhead—Maluri, by Malua. Had a previous unsuccessful attempt on the Cup, though he could not be accused of failing through lack of stamina. Silver Streak by Paper Money-Fulica, by Braxted-Bald Coot, by Fowling PieceAminte, by Minting. Braxted is by Forfarshire (by Royal Hampton) from Sillabub by fit. Sef (by St. Simon). Fowling Piece was by Carbine from a Galapin mare There is an abundance of staying blood on the dam’s side of this pedigree Small Boy, by Psychology (by Tracery) from Susan Lenox, by Kilboy— Shona May, by Treadmill —Edna May, by Multiform—Helen Faucit. by Castor — by Musket. Small Boy has an undoubted stayer’s pedigree. Sunee, bv Australian Sun —Bunee, by Earlston —Birida, by 'Wallace (son of Carbine)—Emmie, by Robinson Crusoe. Australian Sun has sired good stayers, and Sunee in all his races has shaped.like one. The journey will not trouble him. Rebel Lad. by Robespierre (by Thaiaris) from Keel Row, by Gay Lad —Bonne Bouche, by Boniform —Heorthen, by Pheobus Apollo—Hilda, by Musket. Rebel Lad is another who should not be troubled by the distance. Boomerang, by Iliad—Graciosa, by Gay Crusader —Mistrella, by Cyllene. Probably no runner has a better pedigree, and his half-brother Might, by Limond, is in the same category, but it has not been a particularly successful family. Linguist, by Paladin —Countersign, by Paper Money—Kilberry, by Kilbroney— Success, bv The Officer. Trebleack, bf Woodend (by Lemberg)— Morse Signal, b> Vice Admiral (N Z. Cup)—Miew Signal. Trcbleack has not a stud book pedigree, but be is bred ou staving lines. Cottingham, by Polazel (by Polymelus) —Sweet Beauty, by Greyspear—Sweet Smile, by San Francisco—Winning Way, by Cannie Chid. Cottingham wijl stay, as he proved in the Grand National Hurdle Race.
