PUMICE LANDS
“Tremendous Possibilities”
The development of the pumice lands in the north was one of the romances of modern times, said Mr. A. F. Moncur (Government, Rotorua) when speaking in the debate on the Imprest Supply Bill in the House of Representatives last night. Mr. Monctir said that highly satisfactory progress was being made with the working of the pumice areas and big quantities of butterfat were being marketed from land which six or seven years ago did not: produce anything at all. The transformation bad to lie seen to be believed. A pleasing feature of the work was the settlement of the Maori on pumice lauds in the Rotorua district There was new hope for the native race.
Mr. Moncur, referring to the area between Taupo and Tokaanu, said that with the application of modern methods land which a few years ago never looked like producing anything at all was to-dav proving highly productive. The possibilities were tremendous. Much work was being douo by Maoris who were being subsidised from tbo Employment Promotion Fund.
