Women who figure. in the news in London this week are: The Dowager Lady Loch, celebrated her 96th birthday this week with a family tea-party. This was the first year that her twin sister, the late Dowager Lady Lytton, did not share in the celebrations. Lady Lvtton died last September three days after their birthday as the result of a fall. Over 80 years ago the sisters smoked cigarettes, given them by their uncle, Lord Clarendon, who had seen women smoking in Spain. Pamela Sargent, 13-year-old daughter of the conductor. Dr. Malcolm Sargent, who bravely endured a trying journey from Italy with her legs in plaster-of-paris. While holidaying in Italy Pamela developed infantile paralysis, and specialists gave no hope of her recovery. Then it was decided that her one chance lay in treatment in England, so by mule track, train and aeroplane Pamela was brought home, and her first words on landing at Hes-ton'-airport were: “It’s nice to hear English voices again.” Airwoman Amy Johnson, who this week passed her final test as a gliding pilot after onlv Six days’ practice. Her first test was a flight of 30 seconds, the next two of 45 seconds each, followed bv one of 60 seconds with right and left turns, and in the third test she accomplished 18 minutes’ soaring flight with a normal landing.
