London, October 1. ItTANT London windows are taking on a Victorian air One house overlooking Regent’s Park Canal has its windows arrayed with elaborate draperics instead of ordinary curtains. This drapery —lambrequin is its proper name —is of white material with bunches of imitation lilies-of-the-valley sewn on at intervals. Ruffled blinds are another feature of this decorative scheme. They are of rose-patterned chintz.
Early Victorian wallpapers are also enjoying a return to popularity. I have seen one in cyclamen pink with a raised design in silver, looking most effective with a modern type of furniture, and "Lady Louis Mount batten uses a pale grey and silver one in rhe bathroom of her London flat.
Another old-fashioned drapery which has been brought back by fashionable Londoners is the "baldaquin,” or bedbead drapery hanging from a crown. Manv attractive colour schemes can be worked out. with this as the central idea in bedroom furnishing. Many London windows are made gay with window-boxes. Summer boxes tilled with geraniums or daisies and spring ones with hyacinths or daffodils
are quite common, but the fashion of winter window-boxes has been largely inspired by the Queen. When she was Duchess of York her house in Piccadilly was adorned with japotilca and green and gold dwarf cypresses. Now that she can no longer have window-boxes herself-—they would spoil the stately facade of Buckingham Palace—Mayfair hostesses are paying her th e compliment of copying her scheme. The little Princesses’ suite at the palace, however, which looks out’over the gardens, is under no restrictions, and I understand that they will grow their own bulbs for the spring outside the nursery windows. The Duchess of Kent has decided on chrysanthemums for the boxes outside the" windows of her Belgrave Square house —either -bronze, yellow, or pink and white.
