WAITRESSES’ HOURS
Representations To Minister liestaurant keepers throughout New Zealand are to make representations to the Minister of Labour, Hon. H. T. Armstrong, for an amendment to the Shops and Ofiices Act to enable the employment of female assistants till 11 p.m. At present female assistants may not be employed after 10.30 p.in., but the opinion is held that this places employers at a disadvantage in catering for the public, as the girls sign off at the time their services are most needed. From 10.30 p.m. onward male waiters have to be employed, at a cost which employers maintain is uneconomic. Mr. IV. J. Mount joy, secretary of the Wellington Employers’ Association, said yesterday that the extension of hours'would not necessarily mean an increase in hours. Female assistants would start work half an hour later, and thus work the usual time.
