FIRST OPEN MEETING ON NOVEMBER 15
Amateur Athletics In The Hutt Valley Moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet nt the annual meeting of the Hutt Valley Amateur Athletic Club, the chairman, Mr. zV. Marshall, Congratulated the club on the position disclosed in the balance-sheet and also the junior members on the fine performances which stood to their credit. It certainly appeared that the adoption of Tuesday night as a training' evening had ojierated against the successful work of the club and with the return to .Monday night a much better result was attained.. In a place like the Hutt it was possible to have a strong club, and he understood that it was the aim of members to not only make the next season a success but to endeavour to undertake some evening events which should gain the interest and support of the public. The annual report showed a membership of 52. It stated that nt the beginning of the season the training evening was Tuesday. z\s the holding of training on that evening was not entirely satisfactory, the committee changed the evening later in the season to Monday, and decided to open the events to outside competition. The change of evening and the opening of the events was most successful and resulted iu a much larger attendance of competitors and the general public. The club was represented in the Dewar Shield contest by H. Hedge and G. Hunter, two junior members, both of whom put up a very creditable performance. They were successful in winning the high jump in the open contest. A team was entered for the provincial championships, and agaii! the junior members gave a creditable exhibition. T. Hunter won the junior high jump and was second in the senior event. In addition to this success. H. Hedge won the junior long jump, D. J. Benton readied the final of the senior quarter-mile, and D. Henderson qualified for the final of the 120 yards hurdles. Miss D. Turner gave a creditable exhibition and ran prominently in the women’s sprints.
The year ended with a credit balance of £3/12/5, and there were no liabilities. Assets of the club, consisting mainly of trophies, amounted to £5(5. Mr. Kitto, president of the Wellington centre, indicated that the prospects for athletes in the Wellington district this season were particularly bright,_ and assured members of the club that in the forthcoming season the members of the Wellington centre would do all they possibly could to assist the club. Mr. Hose, a centre member, supported Mr. Kitto, and both gave some valuable suggestions which should materially assist the club in the ensuing season.
