WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Gladstone Meeting Mrs. Joblin presided over the recent meeting of the Gladstone Women’s Institute held in the Gladstone Hah. Meodames Wyeth and Wellwood were elected delegates to the half-yearly federation meeting in October. Mrs. Ilenall and Miss Turley, last year’s joint secretaries for the flower show, were reappointed for the show in November. The balancesheet of the recent social showed a substantial profit, and a vote of thanks was accorded all helpers. Trophies for the various competitions held during the year were then presented to the winners. The senior prize went to Miss C. Cooper, with Mesdames Joblm and Wyeth second equal. The junior winner was Miss U. Wyeth, with Miss J. Bubb second. Mrs. Riddell and Mists McKay tied for first place in the senior competition for best blooms with Mrs. Wyeth and Mise Turley equal for second place. The junior winners were Miss B Dalgleish (first) and Miss N. Groves. Special prizes presented were won by Mrs. Panapa (most entries without a win), Misses N. Wyeth and J. 1 aimer (most points by one who had not previously won a prize), Miss ->• Cave (youngest member), Mrs. Cave (heaviest potato crop), and Mrs. P. Cooper (special for bed-jacket). A competition for a beautifully made Maori kitbag wafi won bv Mrs. Cornish. Mro. Dodds and Nurse Hodges addressed the meeting, their subject being their work among the local Maoris, especially the teaching of homecraft among the older girls. The meeting decided to hold the proceeds of the June social for the use o Mrs Dodds and Nurse Hodges as required. ’ Afternoon tea was served by Miss McKay and helpers. , The prize-winners for the inontn s competitions were: Senior cake (given recine) Mrs. Wyeth 1, Mrs. Jackson 2, men's’ socks, Mrs. Riddell 1, Mrs. Wyeth 2; junior nut bread (given recipe), Miss N Bubb 1, Miss J. Bubb 2; socks, Miss N. Wyeth; for a collection of four spring blooms Mrs. R. Cooper was first and Mrs. Wellwood second.' Reikorangi-Waikanae. The recent meeting of the ReikorangiWaikanae Women’s Institute was held in St. Luke’s Hall, Waikanae. This meeting was the eighth birthday of the institute, and was held m conjunction with an electric-cooking demonstration by Mrs. Barrington, for the Horowhenua Electric Hiwer Board. The Waikanae members were the hostesses for the afternoon. . Alfredton. Mrs Weston presided at the monthly meeting of the Alfredton Women’s Institute. There'was a fine display of spring flowers entered for the members’ spring show, Mrs. Didsbury and Mrs. Algie being the judges. The winners were as follows: Mrs. G. Napier 1, Mrs. R. G. Low 2, Mrs. A. Napier 3. Mrs. Didsbury donated the first prize. The winners ot the ginger sponge competition were: Mrs. Ashworth 1, Mrs. Weston 2, Mrs. G. Napier 3. „ A., , Mrs. Rolls and Mrs. S. Edmonds were appointed delegates to the council meeting. The hostesses were Mesdames A. Napier and Heckler. Kaliutara. The monthly meeting of the Kahutara Women’s Institute was held recently, Mrs. N. McKenna presiding. There was a good attendance of members. Mrs. McKenna and Mrs. A. Cole were elected

delegates to attend the federation meeting to be held at Mangamutu. . Miss B. Rendle gave an interesting demonstration on tinfoil pictures, and Mrs. Wilton ga-ve a demonstration on wreath making. The competitions for the afternoon were as follows: Pastry, Mrs. A. Cole 1, Mrs. Rodgers 2; best decorated jar, Mrs. Russell 1, Mrs. Seinonek 2; best bloom in the garden, Mrs. George 1, Mrs. Welsh —- The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Russell, George, Welsh aud Miss Corlett. I’ongaroa. The Pongaroa Women’s Institute celebrated its tenth birthday in the form of a social afternoon. Mrs. Mayman presided. , , , All present responded to the request to wear something representing a song, and the competition was won by Mrs. Robertson. Other competitions were: Number of articles found on a penny, and the lougest strip of paper torn from a “Miutie” wrapper, and were won by Mesdames F. Kent and Rankin respectively. ~ , The monthly competitions resulted as follows: Jar of marmalade, Mrs. Davies 1, Mrs. Mayman 2; jam-jar of spring Howers, Mrs. Campbell 1, Mrs. Davies 2. Afternoon tea was then served, the birthday-cake being .cut. by Mrs. Smith. The drama circle, under the direction of Mrs. Wiltshire, presented a period play, “Little Glass Houses.” Those taking part were Mesdames Mayman. Kent, Wiltshire, Miss B. Johnston and Mrs. E. Kent. Bulls. The monthly meeting of the 'Bulls Women’s Institute was held recently. The president, Mrs. Huddleston, presided over a good attendance of members and visitors. Mrs. Ross and Mrs. Meads were appointed delegates to attend the federation council meeting to be held at Palmerston North. A donation of £l/1/was sent to the Blind Institute. Mrs. Bamicoat, Kimbolton, gave an interesting talk on immigration, and Mrs. Short on institute matters. Tlpe competitions, judged by Mrs. Barnieoat and Mrs. Short, were as follows :—-Best bloom in garden: Airs. Dwyer, 1; Mrs. D. Brookie, 2. Best decorated vase: Miss Broughton, I ; Mrs. Stevens, 2: Mrs. Yopng. 3. Article from scraps of wool Mrs. Button, .1 J Airs. Shepherd, 2; Mrs. Ross, 3. Guessing competition : Mrs. Carson. Paekakariki. A well-attended meeting, presided over by Mrs. A. Tutt, was held recently in St. Peter’s hall. Mrs. Hume gaye an interesting talk on institute affairs, and demonstrated the making of a fireless cooker. Mrs. R. Smith and Mrs. May Smith gained equal places in the flower competition, and Miss Steptoe first and Miss Holtom second in the cake competition. Mrs. Neal won the competition for writing down the greatest number of words ending with “ship.” Mesdames Hedley and Harris were hostesses for th» afternoon. Newland*. The Newlands Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting recently, there being a good attendance. Mrs. Kettlewell presided. A programme had been arranged by the drama and glee circles, the glee circle giving a series of part songs, and the drama circle the play, “The Chimney Corner.” which gained first place at the Women’s Institutes’ drama festival at Lower Hutt.
