NO CONSCRIPTION

Assurance Given By Mr. J. A. Lyons

Sydney, October 18. The Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons, in a broadcast speech at Bendigo, said: “I do solemnly declare that, my Government’s policy never has included, and never will include conscription. There will be no "conscription while my Government is in office. I give you a definite assurance.” This was the Prime Minister’s reply to allegations by the Labour Party that the Federal Government was committed to a policy of conscription and war. Replying to Mr. Lyons at Melbourne, the Leader of the Opposition, Mr. J. Curtin, said that no reliance could be placed on the Prime Minister’s declarations. “If war broke out, there would be conscription,” he added.
