EVENING RECEPTION

League Of Nations Union

Entertains

Mr. mid Mrs. C. A. Berendseu were guests of honour on Thursday night at an evening reception held by th.- Wellington branch of the League of Nations Union. There was a large gathering of members, the guests being received by Mrs. John Henderson. The room was bright witli branches of cherry blossom, white broom, iceland poppies and birch. On her arrival Mrs. Berendsen was presented with a sheaf of golden lilies tied with gold tulle, and Mrs. Berendsen, senr., who was also present, was given a basket o£ freesias and forget-me-nots tied with ribbon to match. Dr. A. G. Butchers, who presided, welcomed the guests of honour and also addressed the gathering, and later in the evening Mr. Berendsen gave an informative address on the complex problems affecting the League at Geneva. An attractive musical programme had been arranged, songs being contributed by Miss Beatrice Douglas (accompanied by Mr. Leslie Souness, who composed the music), Mr. L. J. Hopkins (accompanied by Mrs. Joy Taylor, who composed the music). Later Miss Douglas and Mr. Hopkins sang again, accompanied by Mrs. D’Ath. Supper was served. Those present included members or the executive as follows:' Mr. W. Mathiesou, Mrs.* Walter Nash, Mrs. Chisholm, Mrs. Harsthorne, the Revs. D. D. Scott, W. H. P. McKenzie, and F J. Usher; Messrs. A. Thom, G. Wilson, W. J- Scott, and R. Stewart; Dr. A. G. Butchers; Mesdames J. Henderson, J. C. Andersen, Maslem, Israel, Lundins, Taylor, Corness, Lady Pomare, Miss Morgan, Miss Ahern (secretary). Also present were the Rev. Father Gethin Hughes, Dr. J. Henderson, Messrs. Sutcliffe, H. Tombs, Pottlnger, Dr. Lochore, Mr, and Mrs. J. D. Gray, Mesdames E. Marsden, Mowien, H. B. Mason, A. Robertson, McAuley, Aicken, Crawford, Walter Richards, Young, T. Lowe, Usher; Misses V. Al. Greig, Jean Stevenson, V. Compton, Cable, Old, F. Wilson, Marsden; Mrs. McNeil, Mrs. W. Nash, Mrs. Chisholm, Mrs. Hursthouse, Mrs. R. Douglas, Mr. Isaac, Mrs. Sievwright, Misses Raulston, Mrs. Turksma, Mrs. Preshaw, Miss McGregor, Miss Speedy, Dr. Sutch, the Rev. H. W. and Mrs. Newell, Mr. Patterson and Mr. Ward.
