ANTI-PIRACY PATROL

Cost of Plan May Be About £350,000

(Received September 15, 1 a.m.)

London, September 14.

The Admiralty is discussing details of the anti-submarine patrol with Sir Dudley Pound, Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet, says the “Manchester Guardian’s” naval correspondent. Seaplanes have been allocated to the British patrol, which will cover a length of 1400 miles. The 36 vessels allocated to the patrol will use up much fuel, the estimated cost being £2OO a week for each destroyer, even when steaming at an economical speed. The dispatch of stores will be a heavy item and the extra charge on the Navy estimates may amount to £1250 a week.

Ships continually moving naturally suffer abnormal wear and tear, and the total cost of control may be around £350,000.
