SPRINGBOKS TO FIELD STRONG TEAM
Hawke’s Bay Match To-day
LAST FIXTURE WITH MAJOR UNION
Keen interest is being, taken in the match between the Springboks and Hawke’s Bay, at Napier, to-day,- and many followers of the game in the Wellington area, including Mr. S. S. Dean, chairman of the executive of the New Zealand Rugby Union, have travelled to see the match. Hawke’s Bay is the last major union with a chance to show that New Zealand football has not fallen far below the South African standard. The Springboks have so far decisively beaten all the major unions in the Dominion, including Auckland, Taranaki, Manawatu, Wellington, Canterbury, Southland, and Otago, and it now remains for the Hawke’s Bay team to see whether it can call a halt to the Springboks’ victorious march through the land. The Springboks are taking no chances against Hawke’s Bay to-day and have placed such a strong fifteen in the field that it would seem they are making to-day's game a full-dress rehearsal for the third Test match against New Zealand on September 25. The following beams have been selected: — South Africa.
Full-back: Brand. Three-quarters: Lawton, Babrow, Hofmeyr, Williams. Fly-half: Van der Vyver. Scrum-half: Craven. Front row: Fanie Louw, Lotz, Boy Louw. Middle row: Bastard, Nel, Bergh, Strachan. Back row: Du Toit Hawke’s Bay. Full-back: Dyer. Three-quarters: E. Apsey, R. Devine, and V. Herbert. Five-eighths: P. Reid and C. Robins. Half-back: L. Clothier. Forwards: Back row, W. Johnson, middle-row, P. Smith, T. Reid, A. Bowman, and C. Wilson; front row, E. S. Jackson, D. Dalton, and L. Hannigan.
Springboks Pass Through Wellington. The South Africans arrived at Wellington by the Wahine yesterday morning and, after an hour’s stay in the city, left for Napier by rail-car at 8 o’clock. The Springboks were accompanied by Lieutenant-Colonel J. G. Roach, who is to act as the New Zealand Rugby Union s official representative with the team for the remainder of the tour, and Mr. S. S. Dean, chairman of the executive of the New Zealand Rugby Union. The manager of the South African team, Mr. Percy Day, went to Napier by private car yesterday, accompanied by Mr. F. T. Glasgow, a member of the executive of the New Zealand Rugby Union, who was the union’s official representative with the South African team in the South Island. After playing Hawke’s Bay to-day, the Springboks will go to Gisborne, where they will meet a fifteen representing Poverty Bay, East Coast and Bay of Plenty on Saturday. The Springboks will then have a rest until they meet New Zealand in the third Test match at Auckland on September 25. ARRIVAL AT NAPIER Match Arouses Great Interest Dominion Special Service. Napier, September 14. The Springboks arrived at Napier from Wellington by rail-car at 2.40 o’clock this afternoon, and were welcomed by a large crowd. The visitors were met by the mayor, Mr. C. O. Morse, and representatives of the Hawke’s _ Bay Rugby Union, headed by the president, Mr. J. W. Norrie. The rail-car also stopped at Hastings, where a crowd of about 500 assembled, but there was no official welcome there. Tremendous interest has been aroused in to-morrow’s match, and with every indication of fine weather and a hard ground a record crowd of between 15,000 and 20,000 is expected at McLean Park. A former Hawke’s Bay All Black, Mr. J P. Swain, said to-day that the success of the Springboks was mainly due to a major share of possession of the ball from scrums and to fast backs. “If New Zealand went back to tne original formation we would be more successfur in set scrums, he said. I think that that is the best style for ps, because the one most suited tp our method is the old 2-3-2 formation.".
