Soon after the opening of the Sino-Japanese conflict round Shanghai, the Chinese sank a steamer in endeavour to block the Whangpoo River against Japanese warships. This picture shows the steamer completely submerged, except for the funnel. The junks in the background were later sunk to complete the boom.
