Provincial Championship

The tournament to decide the M elliir’ton provincial amateur snooker champion for 1937 opened in the rooms of Billiards Ltd. last night. The contests consist of two games and some good plav was enjoyed by a fair-sized gallery, though it was evident that the players half not yet struck their best form In the first game. M. Blundell (Commercial Travellers’ Club) beat P. G. Devine (Petone AVorking Mens Club). Blundell was potting well in the first game and soon established a useful lead but Devine then gained touch and drew ahead to lead by 53 to 4G at the end of the first game. Blundell showed some nice positional play in the second game and. playing soundly, forged ahead to take the match bJ lii the second game. J. L. Pctley (Commercial Travellers’ Club) beat B. v\. Peterson (Federal Club), the holder of the title, bv 104 to 84. Playing confidently. Petley early established a lead by potting the black twice in succession nnd soon had a lend of 58 to 8. Peterson rang on a nice brca.c o’f IS. which reduced his leeway to G 3 to 40 at the end of the first game. Early in the second game Petley made a break of 12. which enabled him to lead by SI to 45. I’etersou (hen got going and was settling the coloured balls in fine style, when he had the bud luck to go in after potting the pink. Petley had the advantage of the closing stages and took the match by 10-1 to 84. In the third game. E. AV. Barnes (AVindsor Club) beat E. A. Joking (Y.M.C.A.) by 87 to 73. Barnes sank two blacks in succession early and led by 2-1 to 2. .Tosling appeared to be a trifle nervous, but soon settled down find made a break of 14. which reduced his leeway to 25-17. At the end of the first game, though well behind. .Tosling potted the pink and the black, which left Barnes a lend of G2 to 36. Josling did better in the second game, but Barnes laid him some awkward snookers, and eventually ran out a winner by 87 to <3. To-night’s Programme. The tournament will be resumed tonight.
