Two Showmen Remanded on New Plymouth Charge Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, September 13. A remand to appear at New Plymouth on Wednesday was granted by Mr. J. 11. Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrates Court, Wanganui, to-day, when Edward George Valentine Roberts, aged 28, and William Alexander Thomson, aged 27, described as showmen and canvassers, were charged with the theft of eight suit lengths, valued at £lB/10/-, Hie property of Horace Rayne Wright. The offence was alleged to have been committed in New Plymouth on September 7. Detective N. W. Bayliss prosecuted. Accused was arrested in Wanganui on Friday. EXPLOSIVES IN HOUSE Maori Fined for Storing Gelignite and Dynamite Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, September 13. “I cannot understand a man who has known explosives for so many years taking such a large quantity of dangerous goods into his dwelling. He must have known the great risk involved. This is a case for a substantial penalty,” commented Mr. J. 11. Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, Wanganui, to-day when imposing a line of £4 and costs on a Maori, Matthew Hill, aged 32, who pleaded guilty to storing explosives*, on premises not' licensed for that purpose. The charge was laid under the Explosives and Dangerous Goods Act, 1908. and Hill was alleged to have stored 231 b. o£ explosives, consisting of gelignite and dynamite. and 120 detonators in his dwelling at Putiki. Detective N. W. Bayliss saif Hill was employed by the Public Works Department on the River Road near Koroniti and was able to purchase these materials for use on the job. Mr. D. G. Young, who appeared for defendant, submitted that Hill purchased supplies of explosives each month for use on road work. He bad been handling this material for a number of years and was quite capable of looking after it. In answer to a question by the magi»'trate. Detective Bayliss said Hill had not come under notice for any other offence. GIRL ASSAULTED Young Man For Probation Palmerston North, September 13. Pleading guilty to a charge of assaulting a girl, aged four years 10 months, Raymond Bond Shearer, aged 23, engineer, was admitted to probation for two years by Mr. J. 11. Luxford, S.M., in the .Magistrate’s Court to-day. Detective-Sergeant A. B. Meiklejohu conducted the prosecution, and Mr. G. C. Petersen appeared for accused. NATIONAL PARTY Otaki Electorate Committee Otaki, September 13. The Otaki electorate committee of the New Zealand National Party will hold its annual meeting on Thursday night at Otaki. This, in effect, is a conference of delegates from branches in the electorate, and it is expected that between 40 and 50 delegates will be present. At Levin on Wednesday night Mr. 0. 0. Alazengarb will give a public address under the auspices of the party.
