NO TWO-DAY CRICKET IN HUTT VALLEY

Association Decides to Extend Hours

A suggestion that: two-day cricket matches be played during the coming season was unanimously defeated at the annual meeting of the Hutt Valley Cricket Association last night. It was decided, however, to extend the hours of play. To test the feeling of the meeting, the Empire club moved that two-day cricket be instituted in the A grade competition and in other grades if thought fit. Mr. R. Clunie, Trafalgar Park, strongly opposed the motion, contending that in two-day cricket the holiday and social aspect of the game tended to be lost sijjit of. Mr. J. Wilson said that the only advantage of two-day cricket that he could see was that it would bring in other clubs and make more wickets available.

The secret of the association’s success was one-day cricket, said Mr. L. T. Cobcroft. If it started to think about two-day cricket it would be ruined. The motion was defeated. . , It was decided, after discussion, that the hours of play ln the A grade be 1.45 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.. and in the lower grades 1.45 p.m. to 6.15 p.m. A move to abolish the 15 minutes’ grace in the time of starting was defeated. 'l’he number of drawn games last season meant that the competition did not give a correct indication of the comparative strengths of the teams, said. Mr. Clunie. Longer hours should be instituted and a better system of points allocation adopted. Mr. G. Collin. Gear United, urged that play should end at 6.15 p.m. At the beginning and end of the season it was too dark at 6.30. . Mr. F. Cooper, Taita. said that 0.00 p.m. was too late for the farming community. He. suggested that play should start at 1.30 and end at. 6 p.m. Mr. B. Phillips, Eastbourne, said that, because of transport difficulties his team could not start before 2 p.m.
