Cr. E. T. E. Hogg to Leave Petone WORK FOR BOROUGH PRAISED Last night's meeting of the Petone Borough Council was the last which Cr. E. T. E. Hogg, deputy mayor, attended as a member. Cr. Hogg, will soon be married and will reside at Lower Hutt, and at the conclusion of the business he was presented with a chiming clock as a wedding . gift from the mayor, councillors and inside staff, speakers eulogising his work for the advancement of the borough. The mayor, Mr. A. Scholefield, who spoke on behalf of the council, said their pleasure at Cr. Hogg’s approaching marriage was mixed with regret at his departure from the council table. Cr. Hogg had been a member of the council since May, 1929, and had given valuable services which the council and the people appreciated. The speaker personally was grateful for liis service and advice to the borough. His legal knowledge had been of much greater assistance to Petone than the people as a whole realised. Mr. Scholefield said he hoped the chimes of the clock would remind Cr. Hogg of happy times and of the goodwill during his term as a councillor. As a member of the Gas Board also he had worked for the benefit of the district. The mayor handed the clock to Cr. Hogg with wishes for a happy married life. Thanking the mayor and council, Cr. Hogg said he had been a member for a good many years, and it had been a most pleasant period. There had always been a spirit of sweet reasonableness in the council aijd where there was that, spirit, and not dogmatic attempts by individual members to obtain their objects without listening to the opinions of others, there was good government. He had been particularly pleased to see practically the completion of the Jackson Street widening. The method and economy by which that work had been carried out was almost unique. There had been a remarkable series of negotiations with propertyowners and in later years the work would be pointed to with pride. On the other hand; he was sori> the loan proposals had not been adopted a few months ago because he thought the projected works were necessary. Cr. Hogg thanked the council’s officers, mentioning their staff’s efficiency and willingness to assist. He said he would continue to attend meetings of the Hutt Park Committee and the City and Suburban Highways Board as the council desired. He wished the borough prosperity in the future. Other councillors endorsed the mayor’s statements and the Town Clerk, Mr. H. Firth, spoke on behalf of the staff. Cr. Hogg was granted leave of absence until November 15.
