TASMAN AIR SERVICE

Factors to be Considered

The fact that there were many considerations to be taken into account before a start could be made with the air service across the Tasman was emphasised by the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, in an interview last evening. He said he did not know when the service would be inaugurated, nor did he think anyone else was in a position to say when it would commence.

' “The sooner we come to a final decision the better it will be for all concerned,” said the Prime Minister, “but there are many considerations, including that of the type of machine to be used. Arrangements have to be made which involve Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand, and this all takes time. In the meantime New Zealand has to put up with the irregular arrival from Australia of air mail dispatched by Imperial Airways. The authorities in the Commonwealth send by the first steamer available, and if there is delay they are not responsible for it. We cannot expect, anything better in the meantime. It is quite possible that the present rearmament programme in Great Britain may have an effect on the delivery of aircraft for use in the Tasman service, but I have no definite information on that point.”
