DIVORCE SUITS
American Heiress and Italian Baron
(Received September 13,12.45 a.m.)
Los Angeles, September 12.
A picturesque international divorce case is revealed in the filing of cross suits by the Baron and Baroness Berlingiere. She is a noted American heiress, formerly Miss Merry Fahrney. He is an Italian nobleman. The baron asked for the annulment of the marriage, 130,000 dollars damages and 10,000 dollars attorney’s fees. He said he was a member of Italy’s finest families with high ideals and a deep respect for women. “I am a gentleman of culture, highly sensible disposition and refined taste,” he claimed. He alleged that the baroness sought notoriety with little or no regard for the feelings of others. He said his money disappeared, supporting her since their marriage a fortnight ago. She possessed 3,000,000 dollars. The baroness’s attorney claimed that the baron’s inability to speak English and her inability to speak Italian produced the trouble. The attorney added, “She wants to settle down now.”
