Dominion Badminton Finals

The New Zealand badminton championships concluded on Saturday night, when a large crowd witnessed some exhilarating displays in the men’s and women’s championship finals. I*. Hawksworth (Masterton) retained his title by defeating J. Spedding (New Plymouth) in two straight sets. Miss M. Kerr (Otago) produced brilliant form to defeat Miss M. Edmondson (Waikato) in two sets and so win the first badminton title held in Otago. Results were:— Championships. Men’s singles: P. Hawksworth beat J. Spedding, 15-2, 15-7. Women’s singles: Miss M. Kerr beat Miss M. Edmondson, 11-0, 11-4. Men’s doubles: G. A. Pearce and P. Hawksworth beat P. Anderson (Auckland) and J. Spedding, 15-3. 15-10. Women’s doubles: Mrs. P. Hawksworth and Miss M. Kerr beat Misses M. Edmondson and J. Ramsay (Auckland), 15-0. 15-0. Mixed doubles: Hawksworth and Mrs. Hawksworth beat G. A. Pearce and Miss M. Kerr, 15-11, 15-11. B Grade Results. Men's singles: G. Bolwell (Dunedin) beat B. Mahar (New Plymouth), 15-7, 15-6. Women’s singles: Miss P. Sorley (Waikato) beat Miss J. Hanson (Auckland), 11-2, 3-11, 13-10. Men’s doubles: R. Stark and G. Gray (Dunedin) beat G. Bolwell and J. Smith (Dunedin), 15-6, 15-2. Women's doubles: Miss P. Sorley (Waikato) and Miss E. Philip (Dunedin) beat Misses J. Leith and E. Hughes (Dunedin), 11-6, 11-5. Mixed doubles: R. Stark and Miss C. Emslie beat R. Philip and Miss E. Philip, 15-12, 15-7.
