NEW DESTROYER

Christened Maori by Mrs. W. J. Jordan London, September 2. Mrs. W. J. Jordan, wife of the High Commissioner for New Zealand, christened the destroyer Maori, whic*' was launched at Glasgow. ’The Maori belongs to the 1935 programme of seven destroyers of the Tribal class, orders for which were placed in March, 1936, as follows: —Maori and Ghurka, with the Fairfield Shipbuilding Company, Glasgow; Afridi and Cossack, with Vickers-Armstrougs, Ltd., at Walker-on-Tj no ; Mohawk and Nubian, with John I. Thornyeroft and Co., Ltd., Southampton : and Zulu, with Alexander Stephen and Sons, Ltd., Linthouse, Glasgow. These ships are to be completed in Janu-ary-March. 1935. Each is 355 feet 6 inches in length, by 36 feet 6 inches iu breadth, and has a standard displacement of 1850 tons on a mean draught of 9 feet. The propelling machinery will develop 44,000 shaft horse-power (double that of the Awatea), and give a speed of 36 knots.

The Maori and her six sisters perpetuate the names of famous destroyers which spent the whole of their war service in 1914-18 on the Dover Patrol. Under the 1936 programme nine other destroyers of the Tribal class were ordered in June, 1936, and they are to be named Somali, Tartar,'Eskimo, Mashona, Matabele, Punjabi, Ashanti, Tledouin and Sikh.
