Lost Attraction For New
Zealand Owners
Sydney, September 3.
The “Daily Telegraph,” in drawing attention to the small number of New Zealand horses visiting Sydney this spring, says that until a year or two ago it was usual for 30 to 40 New Zealand horses to go to Sydney, but the position bad changed now and most of the visitors went straight to Melbourne.
Australian racing, particularly In Sydney, has lost its attraction for New Zealand owners. A few years ago they became so used to sweeping the board at our big meetings that they started to bring- over all sorts of rubbish, thinking they could repeat the performance. They went home disappointed and badly out: of pocket. The New Zealanders bad now come to the conclusion that Victoria, with its non-proprietary clubs, had more to offer in the way of prize-money than New South Wales. BOOKMAKERS’ COMPLAINT Sydney. September 3. A deputation of bookmakers told the Premier, Hon. B. S. B. Stevens, that excessive taxation on racing was forcing many bookmakers out of business and others were being compelled to resort to unlawful devices to evade taxation. The deputation added that fewer bookmakers were now operating than in the worst year of the depression. Mr. Stevens, replying, inferred that a reduction of the betting turnover tax from 1 per cent, to } per cent, would probably be made before the spring carnival.
