AMERICA CONCERNED
Prevalence of Infantile Paralysis
(Received September 3, 8.30 p.m.) New York, September 3. The whole continent is concerned at the prevalence of infantile paralysis, especially in the middle west and southern Canada. The United States death-roll is more than 200. New cases reported last week numbered 621. The schools in six States have been closed as a precautionary measure, and 1.200,000 children are having an involuntary holiday. The outbreak in the United States is described as a mild epidemic, but grave alarm is felt in Ontario, w hei e it is threatening to overtax the hospitals. There have been twelve deaths among 804 cases. At Toronto 5000 children were treat-, ed by a zinc sulphate nasal spray. This is described as the first mass test of such a treatment.
