Waiwetu Tennis Club’s Successful Year

The 1936-37 season of the Waiwetu Tennis Club was the most successful financially and from a competitive viewpoint since the club's formation seven years ago, stated the report presented to the annual meeting. . For the second year in succession and the third time in all, the club won the inter-club championship by a substantial margin of points. In addition, grade championships were won by the senior B and fourth grade teams, both being undefeated, while the junior and filth grade teams suffered their only loss in the finals. ~ , „.. Club competitions resulted :_ —Mtn s championship, C. Moran ; women s championship, Miss I. Neill; mens singles handicap, C. Browning; womens singles handicap. Miss 1. Neill; womens doubles, Mrs West and Miss Neill; combined doubles (Ansell Cup), C. Moran and Miss I. Neill; mens doubles, 1. Stoupe and C. Moran. . Representative honours were gained by Misses Neill and Browning and C. Moran. .. The following officers were elected.— Patron, the Hon. W. Nash; president, Mr F. Stoupe; vice-presidents, Mr. Frank Ansell, Mr. L. Mut'ton. Mr. K. A. Usniar, Mr. A. Ansell; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. B. Mitchell; club captain, Mr. 11. Bornholt; vice-captain, Mr. H. Doran; hou. auditor, Mr. F. Black; committee, Mcsdames Doyle and Mitchell, Miss Neill, Messrs. N. Clapham. and G. Nicholson. . It was stated that five teams would again be entered in the inter club competitions, the senior B team automatically gaining senior A status. A working bee was arranged tor Saturday, September 18. and the opening day for Saturday. October 2.

Charge of Intoxication

John Boyd, cleaner, Lower Hutt, was remanded when he appeared before Mr. H. I’. Lawry, S.M., at Lower Hutt, charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a car. Constables C. E. Tanner and Jones arrested him.

NEW WHIPPET RACING CLUB FORMED

First Meeting Shortly A new whippet racing club has. been formed in the Hutt Valley.. It will be known as the Petone Whippet Racing Club. The initial membership is 42, and a number of cups and trophies have been given for competition. The first race meeting will be at the Hutt Park on September 25. The following arc the officers.;— Patron, Mr. S. Platt; president, Mr. T. Magee; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. Skilton. G. Inkster, Cundy, J. Walsh, D. Shine, and Dolling; secretary-trea-surer, Miss N. Mears; committee, Messrs. Nicholas, Treweek, Jones, Collins, Tripp and Cundy; judges, Messrs. J. Mears and B. Bean.

ESPERANTO CLUB MEETS

‘Excellent progress was reported at the weekly meeting, of the Hutt Valley Esimranto Club. There was a full attendance of members. Miss K. Stirling presided.

It was reported that letters of greeting had been forwarded to Esperantists in Canada and Yugoslavia. A diverting sketch, translated by the secretary, Mr. Henri Thoms, was presented by Miss D. Philips, Mr. R. Wallace and Mr. W. Thoms. It was entitled “La Familia Afero” (The Family Affair). Mr. J. Fischbacher recited the poem “La Mtirmurantaj Pinoj” (The Whispering Pines/.

PETONE ROAD CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Petone Amateur Road Cycling Club’s. championships will be held today. There will be a 50-mile race for seniors and a 16-mile race for juniors.* Both events will bo run under a time trial, with a sealed handicap. .The senior race will be from the Heretaunga boating sheds, Petone, to a point on the Rimutaka Hill, and back. The junior will start from the Paine place, to Stokes Valley and back. Races start at 2 p.m.
