POTATO MARKET
Canterbury Demand Dull By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, September 3. Grain and produce markets continue quiet with only restrained trading in any sect ion. Potatoes still provide the chief interest, but the position appears to have depreciated since the beginning of (lie week. Auckland reports state that supplies there are scarce and that prices are high, but it is difficult to account for this statement in view of fairly substantial shipments that have been made to tlie north recently. Potatoes are being offered in good quantities from the country but al present few buyers are available. There are practically no orders from the Net'll Island, and the trade is not disposed to take undue risks at this late stage of the season. Reports from outports indicate a very dull demand. The price here is nominally £8 on trucks, but there is little activity. Oats arc weak with very little inquiry, and chaff is extremely dull. There are indications that the spring revival of interest in the small seeds trade has begun to appear, but the volume of trade at present is confined to local retail orders. (Auckland message on Page 7.)
