NAVAL REARMAMENT

Heavy British Programme For Next Year London, August 4. Mr. Hector Bywater, the "Daily Telegraph’s” naval writer, expects that in 1938 the British naval rearmament programme will probably equal the extensive building of 1937, when 664,000 tons are being constructed. This is believed to be a record in peace time. He adds that well-informed people anticipate the building in 1938 of three to five further battleships, six or seven cruisers, and a proportionate quota of destroyers, submarines, and smaller craft, and also a further increase in the personnel of at least 125,000, including the manning of a largelyincreased fleet, air arm, in which in the next four years aircraft borne on carriers and catapult ships will rise from 230 to 550.
