WORK FOUND 655 MEN IN FOUR MONTHS

TRADESMEN URGENTLY REQUIRED
The total dependants under 16 years of age of the 50 men selected by district placement officers for work in the boroughs of Lower Hutt, Fetone and Upper Hutt, under the Government’s £4 weekly subsidy scheme, number ISO. Wives included, the number is well over 200. Twenty men have been started at ,Petone, 20 at Upper Hutt, aud 10 at Lower Hutt. The number at Lower Hutt is expected to be considerably increased shortly. The total placements in the Hutt Valley district since April, 1937, have been 655, stated the placement officw, Mr. K. D. Whelan, to "The Dominion” yesterday. In this number, permanent positions were found for IiSO, casual jobs lor 135, and temporary jobs for 334. Tradesmen, such as carpenters and bricklayers, are urgently required, and applicants to the placement offices for such employment can be sent to immediate work. A grade mechanics are also wanted in the Hutt district, while yesterday there was an inquiry by a large motor company for two male machinists able to operate an electric sewing machine. On its list of available men classified according to occupation, from the returns of all offices in New Zealand, which the Hutt Valley offices receives weekly, the unclassified column includes a _ pearouger, wood-bender, and even a missionary. The list covers all occupations from analysts to window-cleaners. The Hutt Valley office itf entering whole-heartedly into the youth campaign under the scheme in whichsit is possible for youths and young men between 18 and 25 years of age to take up a trade. Officers are busy interviewing likely men for the various trades. It was pointed out by Mr. Whelan that it was not necessary for a man to be on relief to receive the benefits of the placement service. The service was a public utility open to all, employer and employee alike. Tradesmen or any other class of worker could enrol without any question as to their private affairs.
