Sterling Exchange Higher ; NOTE ISSUE INCREASES The weekly statement of assets and liabilities of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand as at the close of • business on Monday, August 2, is as follows.

Proportion of reserve (No. 7 less No. 5) to notes and other demand liabilities, 79.676 per cent., compared with 79.576 per cent, on July 26. The note issue has increased by £39,744 and now amounts to £12,630,571. Demand liabilities to the State total £6,725,665, an increase of £307,269. The trading banks’ reserve balances are up by £32,037 and now total £9,793,843. Other demand liabilities at £568,335 show a decrease of £394,123. Other liabilities total £94,626, a decrease of £10,898. A further increase of £17,752 in sterling exchange brings the total up to £20,876,822. The gold holding is still unchanged at £2,801,791. Subsidiary coin at £110.162 shows a decrease of £1964. Advances to the State dairy' industry account have decreased by £64,033 and now amount to £4,213,700. Advances to the State for other purposes remain unchanged at £300.000. There is no change in investments at £2,906,450. Other assets total £104,115, an increase of £22,273.. The statement balances at £31,313,041, a decrease of £25,971. FOREIGN EXCHANGES Position of Sterling London, August 4.
