Provision of Chilling Facilities Needed MR. F. R. PICOT’S VIEW Appreciation of the interest shown by the Director of Internal Marketing, Mr. F. R. Picot, in the proceedings of the annual conference of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation, was expressed by the president, Mr. T. C. Bnrsb, when the conference closed at We 11 ing ton yester d a y. Mr. Picot said that his department desired to help the industry, but that any far-reaching reform could be made only after careful consideration of its probable effects. The department would not slack on the job, and bird a great deal of work already in hand. It was necessary to consider the interests of all sections of the industry, and advantage would he taken “of the assistance that could be given by those who had handled growers’ produce in the past aud by the retail trade. In view of the fact that the fruit industry was governed by the lanv of supply and demand, it seemed obvious that the provision of chilling facilities was essential, and the necessary expenditure would not be baulked al. Mr. Picot also referred to the byproducts of the industry. "Where the capital for dealing with this aspect is to come from, doesn’t worry me,” he said. “If the Government of the day sees fit to provide it, well and good, but I believe that any proposition that I put up will be sufficiently sound for the industry to have no hesitation about it.”
