NEW WING AT REAR
Auckland Chief Post Office, Further departmental building is to be carried out in Auckland in the near future. Recently it was announced' that a departmental block was to be erected in Shortland Street, where provision was to be made for 'the continuance of the branch post office there, but that meant that only part of the ground floor would be occupied for post office purposes. In the meantime, however, tlie ever-increasing staffs employed in the chief post office in Queen Street have been pressed for space in which to work in comfort, and this has been a pressing need 1 for some years. Tlie removal of tho railway station from the rear of the chief post office to a position fully a mile away Jias provided the ground area for an extension of the existing post office premises, and now that the necessary formalities for the transfer of the land from one Government department to another have been gone through, a large block of land has been made available for that extension. Plans are now being prepared by the Government architect, Mr. J, Mair, and his staff, for a four-story block, to be erected in reinforced concrete, at tlie rear of the present building. This will mean a four?story block, 76ft. x 166 ft.. which will give additional space half as big as the whole of the existing chief post, office. It is hoped that the plans will be completed in time for tenders to be called before the end of the year
