OLD LITHOGRAPH
Scene on Marae of Putiki Pa Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, August 4. _ Putiki pa as it appeared in the earliest days of Wanganui is the subject of an interesting lithograph which is deposited in the Alexander Museum. The original of this picture was purchased in London for £6OO and was taken io France. Before its sale, however, Mr. F. G. Moore lithographed a number of copies from the original and bivught them to Now Zealand. The scene depicts a number of Maoris engaged in their daily tasks on the marae or courtyard of their pa. The original was painted by Mr. J. A. Gilfillan. The inscription on the copy in the museum is rather interesting, and reads as follows: “Interior of a native village or pa at Petre, one of the New Zealand Company’s settlements in Cook’s Strait, Northern Island; figures in the foreground are all portraits, and the original picture was painted outlie spot.” ~ . , , Petre was the name of the original settlement at Wanganui. It was named after Lord Petre, who was on the directorate of the New Zealand Company.
