RISING COSTS

Fruit Board May Hold Second Conference GOVERNMENT’S POLICY AWAITED A second conference of the New Zealand Fruit Export Control Board may be held toward the end of the year, the chairman, Mr. H, E. Stephens, intimated when the annual conference closed at Wellington yesterday. “We have been labouring under a handicap at this conference, because we don’t know exactly where we stand,” said Mr. Stephens. “We are facing rising costs and wages, and we are not in a position to meet either at the present time. Until the Government declares its policy—because this is a situation brought about by Government legislation—we are not able to discuss our problems properly. The board, therefore, considers it may be necessary to call another conference later in the year.”
