A promise that the Australian Rugby League team visiting Auckland on it# way to England and France would provide the best games possible in Auckland because members had been assureci they would not be sent home on account of injuries, wae made by the team s manager, Mr. Harry Sunderland, at .a mayoral reception accorded the team in the Town Hall this afternoon. The visitors were welcomed by tne deputv-mavor, Hou. B. Martin, the president of the New Zealand League Council, Mr. J. A. Redwood, and a representative of the Maori race, the Rev. 1Panapa. The welcome was heartily endorsed by officials and supporters oi tbe Auckland Rugby League. Mr. Panapa, speaking on beliall 01 tne Maori race, expressed great appreciation that the Rugby League had arranged tor a match between the Kangaroos ana tne Maori team to be played at Auckland. "We are all one people,” he said, and we appreciate this courtesy. After the responses of Mr. Sunderland, Jlr. R. Savage, business manager, and W. Prigg, captain, Mr. Panapa led a Maori haka. to which the visitors responded with an aboriginal war-cry. TOTTEY LIKELY TO JOIN TEAM Provisional Permission Given by Board of Control By Telegraph-—Press Association. Auckland, August 4. A cable was received by the manager of the Kangaroos from Sydney to-day in connection with the invitation sent by members of tbe team for Fred Tottey, a former New Zealand player, to join the Aorangi and accompany the tourists at their expense to England. The message stated that the board of control desired fuller details but would probably permit Tottey to travel, provided there was no disposition to Hout the board’s original decision. The message added that Tottey, elated, at his team-mates’ wonderful generosity, was preparing to leave for New Zealand on Thursday.
