CHAMPION DISCUSTHROWER

J. D. Morgan Training For Empire Games

Dominion Special Service.

Wanganui, August 4. Champion discus thrower of the West Coast centre, and runner-up in the past two national championships, J. D. Morgan, Wanganui, recently commenced systematic training iu view of possible selection for the Empire Games. At the Dominion championships held in Dunedin two years ago> Morgan hurled the discus 130 ft. He continued solid training throughout the year, and just prior to last Christmas was constantly throwing well over 130 ft. in competitions. While practising he exceeded 140 ft. on a number of occasions. When the Dominion championships were held in Auckland this year, the Wanganui champion found himself hopelessly stale and'was not able to approach the form displayed three months earlier. The experience, however, proved worth while. At the beginning of. the winter he placed himself in the care of a physical culture expert, with the result that lie has developed considerably and added extra weight. Mr. Morgan is a keen committee member of the Wanganui Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, and as a coach for competitors in field events has done a vast amount of good work.
