The Live Stock Embargo
Sir,—l am very pleased to support the views, expressed by Sir William Perry and Mr. F. W. Ellis in your columns re the live stock embargo. I do not think, however, we need worry much longer about this matter, for I feel sure that following advice which will be given to the Government by the Hon. Walter Nash on his return from England, the Government will take the only right action possible under the circumstances, namely, call upon all those who oppose lifting of the embargo to show sound scientific grounds for their attitude. Failing this, the embargo should at once be lifted, and no one could complain. No reasonable person can doubt that it will be perfectly safe to return to direct importation regulations, with the added safeguard of 14 days in London quarantine station, which would be included. If we wait until every farmer in New Zealand is unanimous we will never make any progress at all. World, competition is becoming keener and keener, and we must go with the times, or go under. Scientific opinion has shown clearly, and practical experience has demonstrated, that no risk would be incurred. This being so, my view is that it is a matter for the stud stock breeders and the New Zealand Government to decide, for why should a breeder who is trying to improve his stock be hampered by unnecessary restrictions'? —I am, etc., G. F. MOORE. Bushy Park, August 3.
