RAIN OF SHELLS

Heavy Bombardment of Madrid LARGE HOSPITAL HIT Fighting South-west of Capital By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Madrid, August 3. During a heavy all-night bombardment of Madrid by rebel batteries, over 600 shells fell in the city. The largest hospital was hit and the patients were transferred to the basements. The telephone building was hit twice. People fled to cellars and other places of refuge. The insurgents launched a determined attack around Carabonebel, to the south-west of Madrid. A report from Madrid states that the Government forces counter-attacked, driving out General Franco’s men from several positions. The British steamer Marion Moller, which has been 10 days waiting outside Santander and Gijon, succeeded in making Gijon with its lights out while the rebel warship Almirante Cervera was cruising nearby. RECOGNITION BY VATICAN Franco’s Government (Received August 4, 7.30 p.m.) London, August 4. The British United Press correspondent at Salamanca says that it is officially announced that the Vatican has recognised General Franco’s Government. Recognition was preceded by a visit by Monsignor Antoniutti to General Franco. It was then agreed, says an official announcement, to grant General Franco’s Vatican representative, Don Pablo Churruca, the status of an official diplomatic representative with the rank of Charge d’Affaires.
