The Child and the Viper

The three-year-old son of Simina Koyitch, a peasant woman from a village near Konyts, in Herzegovina, was sent by his mother into the garden with a bowl of bread and milk to keep him out of mischief while she busied herself about the house. A few minutes later she was horrified to observe her ch’ld sharing his food with a poisonous snake, and tapping it gently on the head with the spoon.

Although the snake showed no signs of animosity, the mother shrieked in terror, alarming the neighbours, who eventually succeeded in getting the snake away from the child and killing it
