AWAPUNI GALLOPS

Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, August 3. A heavy dew left the course proper at Awapuni slightly heavy for training operations this morning. Fast workers had the privilege of exercising next to the rails. Catalogue and Old Surrey, the two Winter Cup candidates from Mrs. A. IV., McDonald’s stable, left for the south to-day. W. J. Broughton will pilot the former, and 11. N. Wiggins will probably ride Old Surrey. Catalogue appears to have thrown off the effect of hie Trentham injury nnd they should both give good accounts of themselves on the trip. Tidewaiter (G. Tattersail) had Alby (J. Chaplin) as a companion in a useful work-out this morning, the pair jumping off well up the straight to stride along over the first six furlongs under a good hold. They speeded up approaching the three furlongs peg to come home the last three furlongs in 39see. Tidewaiter had the outside running, but he. was going strongly at the finish. Ho will leave for the south on Friday night in charge of the former horseman. L. H. Jones, who is again associated with G. IV. New’s stable.

Aria (Mansfield) showed a good turn of speed by running from the five furlongs peg. to the two in 38). It was her first gallop since recovering from her injury. The Crooner (J. Leach), who looks a picture of health, was hard held in. a three furlongs scamper which occupied 42. Dawning Light (Mansfield) ran from, the five furlongs post to the two in 42, the filly hanging out badly to finish on the outside of the course. ... Quadroon (Leach) left five furlongs behind in 1.7), the last three furlongs in 38). Wagner (Chisholm),, from the same stable, executed a similar task, but took Isec. longer. Peter Piper (Chaplin) was slightly in front of Rangemor (Tattersail) and Bold Bruce (L. H. Jones) in the early portion of a round, but the other pair were m front at the finish, the last three furlongs being covered in 40. , Orient Dawn (W. J. Broughton) and Pench King (Chisholm) broke 26 over two furlongs. Both are back after spellln'Surmount (Tattersall) and the Peach Bran a v _Elvaette gelding (Chaplin) ran three furlongs in 39. the former being kept back to his companion. Surmount shows a lot of promise and should develop into a good sort. Two newcomers to the ranks, a htly bv Posterity—Aspic, and a colt by Musketoon—Snowshoe, were among the active workers this morning. The former. who was bought at the Trentham yearling sales on behalf of a Rangiwahia owner, is a half-sister to Toxlt. le Monde, Solidify. Aspinn. etc. She will race as Chore Ami. The colt was bred by the Ashhurst studmaster, Mr. W. T. Bailey, who had Musketoon quartered at his establishment for a period. JOHN CHARLES GOES SOUTH Dominion Special Service. Hastings, August 3. The hurdler John Charles left Hastings this morning for Riccarton to compete at'the National meeting. „ Since his dual success at .Wellington he has done very well and is in great, order.
