FURTHER RIOTING AT BELGRADE
Patriarch’s Funeral CROWD FLEES BEFORE POLICE BATONS By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Belgrade, July 29. Police with fixed bayonets are clearing the streets, where rioting broke out after the funeral of the Patriarch, Archbishop Varnava. There were hysterical scenes as members of the Youth Movement dragged the hearse, bearing a glass coffin through kneeling crowds. Fifty bishops in gold-embroi-dered vestments followed, the hearse, but the Government and the Catholic Church were not represented. Many men and women fainted. Shouting “Down with the Government and the police,” the crowd attempted to penetrate to the centre of the city. An unauthorised delegation tried to join the procession and a tight began. Police charged with their batons, and thousands of spectators fled wildly. There were similar scenes at Slavia, many persons being injured on roads leading to Saint Sava Church, which was guarded by artillery mid cavalry. More than a hundred persons were injured in rioting at Sarajevo after church services in memory of the Patriarch.
