Stay-in Strike at Newcastle DEMONSTRATION AT MINE By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Received July 30, 9.30 p.m.) Sydney, July 30. Only a few stay-in strikers at the ‘‘John Darling” colliery at Newcastle have left the mine, and these did so for either personal or family reasons. The remainder are amusing themselves at cards and community singing, Tlie police to-day prevented 1500 miners and their wives and friends from making a demonstration at the toj> of the mine. The marchers included men from seven of the surrounding collieries who bore down on the. “John Darling” pit singing “Tipperary, Solidarity for Ever,” and waving red flags. The police handled the situation tactfully and no disorder occurred, though the police were subjected to consider* able heckling and banter. The Northern Miners’ Union vice-president, Mr. Henry Scanlon, addressed the men and urged them to remain calm. A compulsory conference on Monday before the Industrial Commission is to deal with the dispute in the coal industry in New South Wales.
