MANNEQUIN IN COURT

Judge’s Remarks Cause Laughter XVhen a tali, slender young mannequin put du an £875 mink coat and walked up and down a London court recently, Mr. Justice Swift caused laughter by remarking: “I don’t know why in the world anybody should want to give £BOO for a fur coat—l mean without its contents.” The coat led to an/action in which Mr. Arthur Horovitz, Vienna, claimed £5OO from Mr. G. M. Garcia, Bell Moor, Hampstead, as balance of its purchase price. After a consultation between counsel, Mr. R. F. Levy, K.C., for Mr. Horovitz. stated that they had arrived at a settlement in terms satisfactory to both parties. When the mannequin stepped into the witness-box to enable him to inspect the coat more closely during the hearing, the judge smilingly observed that he might be told by the Court of Appeal that he ought not to look at a witness until she was sworn. Mr. Levy: But your lordship is not looking at the lady. You are looking at the coat! Judge: Don’t you make any mistake about that. “I have forgotten what you called the lady who came along in the eoat,” added the judge later to Mr. Levy while Herr Leonard Sehnahl, plaintiff’s sales manager in Vienna, was holding up the paper patterns he had made of the coat.

“We call her a mannequin,” Mr. Levy answered. “She certainly was much more agreeable to look at than the paper patterns,” commented the judge.
