An All-Women’s Cruise

A SEVEN-TON yacht manned entirely by women left Dartmouth (Devon) recently for a cruise round tlie Seilly Islands and off tlie coast of France. She was the yawl Juauita, owned by Mrs. Charles Pears, wife of tlie well-known marine artist, and she is unique as a “training ship” for yachtswomen. Mrs. Pears has been training women in seamanship and navigation aboard her yacht for the last seven years.

Her pupils come from all walks of life. They include society girls, office girls, nurses, married women and bachelor girls. A number of them are wives or fiancees who want to sail with their husbands but do not know enough about handling a boat. Only too often their menfolk prove too busy or too impatient to teach them, so they ship for a week or two with Mrs. Pears to be turned into “seamen.” During their cruise they get a thorough grounding in the elements of seamanship, including steering a compass course, chart work and the handling of a yacht’s gear.
