The Labour Day Meeting.
Arrangements are now complete for the biggest event of the model flying year in New Zealand —the annual Labour Day flying meeting of the Southern Districts (North Island) Model Aeroplane ztsoociation. Last year this meeting was an outstanding success, and this year, with the events now open to all _ model flyers throughout New Zealand, it seems probable that the success will be repeated. On Saturday, October 23, all contestants will be registered at the contest headquarters. In the afternoon the handlaunched glider and towline-launched sailplane classes will be decided, and in the evening the annual meeting of the .Southern Districts Model Aeroplane Association will be held.
Sunday will be a full day. The fuselage R.0.G., Wakefield class R.0.G., wingless autogyro class R.0.G.. and ’petrol-driven model clasft will be decided. This will mean continuous flying from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. if contestants are to complete their full quota of flights. In the evening an indoor meeting will be held with spar ILL. and any type R.O.W. classes. Monday morning's programme will consist of spar H.L. and scale R.O.G. classes.
Most of these events are divided into senior and junior sections and adequate prize money is being offered. The most interesting points in connection with the competition classes are that no scale hand-launched event is included, ensuring that only good models are entered in the class; there is an autogyro event, and the petrol-driven model event will no longer be judged on a basis of duration alone. The'autogyro event will give the real scientists among- model builders a chance to show their skill, and the petrol-driven model class is now a precision event. Points will be deducted for every second the engine runs beyond a set time, and the method of awarding points will favour the model with a fast climb, a flat glide, and an engine under perfect control as to length of run.
Model builders throughout the Dominion enn do their part by attending and entering for as many events as possible. Last year there were more than 50 contestants registered; it is hoped this year to have at least 70 taking part. Anyone who attended last year will confirm the fact that it was a great show. By now most people should have started on their models for the meeting; those wh« have not have no tim® to Ipjitt,
