SHEEP WORRYING
Outbreak on Port Hills, Christchurch Dominion Spectat Service Christchurch, July 30. Au outbreak of sheep-worrying on the Port Hills, Christchurch, is causing "o'leern among fanners of the district. Within two weeks one farmer bus lost 20 ewes, which were chased and badly injured by dogs making raids by night and in the early mornings. Two dogs were shot during the week, a mongrel sheepdog and an Airedale: but two others have been making regular raids and have shown sufficient cunning to keep out of range when approached. These two dogs are described as a black and tan sheepdog and a retriever, and the belief that they are from Lyttelton is strengthened by reports that, when shots have been fired from a distance, they, have always disappeared over the hills in the direction of the port. Adding to the landholders difficulties. it is onlv on rare occasions that a dog shot or canturcd has a collar and can be identified. One man who has been farming on t'he Port Hills for 17 years, claimed that although his loss through dogs amounted to about £4O each year, he had only once in that period shot a dog possessing a collar, and had thus been able to obtain redress.
