Road Safety
What does the Acting-Minister of J ran, sport mean by his remark, asgiven iu your issue of 22nd inst., when he states that the “rate” of accidents has been reduced. It' he means number of accidents, why not say so; but. if he means the rate on some particular basis, then say what basis, and we shall know what he means. In the absence of definite statistics as to fatal and non-fatal accidents, and in view of the ambiguity of the statements of some of our transport authorities, and also bearing in mind that the number of fatal accidents during June has been stated in our papers to have been 25, are we correct in assuming that there has been a considerable increase in accidents both fatal and non-fatal? What authority collects the details as to road and motor accidents, and what authority publishes Qiose statistics? The public wants to be informed on all these points. If there has been an increase in accidents, then we want to know the causes, but if there has been no increase, then let us know so that no one may be unnecessarily alarmed.—l am.' etc., MORE LIGHT PLEASE.
