JAPANESE DENIALS
Reported Chinese Successes . London, July 28. Absence of confirmation of Chinese “successes,” combined with positive Japanese denials of them, have caused foreign circles to doubt the authenticity of Chinese reports of victories. The Nanking Government informed the Chinese Embassy in London that Chinese troops recovered Langfang and drove out the Japanese from Tungchow, where they captured three tanks. It was also stated that they hoped shortly to dominate the autonomous area in Hopei Province, of which Tungchow is the capital. The Chinese declare that they captured seven bombers when they took Chaocliiateng aerodrome, south of Peking. Signs of an effective Japanese rally are perceptible, however, In the Chinese admission that the Japanese reoccupied Fengtai after a seven hours’ counter-attack, and doggedly counterattacked -at Langfang. The Government is being deluged with telegrams from overseas Chinese urging resistance to the death and promising unlimited money and supplies. The foreign forces at Peking consist of 200 Lancashire Fusiliers, 500 American marines, 250 French troops, and 100 Italian troops. The guard at the Japanese Embassy has been greatly augmented. There were 20,000 Japanese troops in the Peking and Tientsin areas on July 25.
