HARRIER NOTES
Tanadees Cup Race To-morrow WELLINGTON B GRADE CHAMPIONSHIP (By Whipi’EU-In.) Principal interest in the harrier sport in Wellington will centre to-morrow around the runs lit Lyall Bay, where Scottish will hold their live-mile race for the Tanadees Cup; the Wellington club will hold its B grade club championship, and Varsity will run a live-mile handicap race, to count for the club championship. Brooklyn will run at Karori, and the Presbyterian club will start from the Brooklyn Presbyterian Church. Hutt Valley will hold a members’ invitation run from 74 Marsden Street, Lower Hutt, and the C.Y.M. club will decide the club championship, over a six and a quarter mile course. For Olympic there is an invitation run from Kelburn, and for Methodist a club run from Kaiwarra. The Tanadees Cup. As the membership of the Scottish Harrier Club is well up this season they can bo expected to turn out for club events in large numbers, and to-morrow about 50 entrants should face the starter in the Tanadees Cup race, over five miles. The performances of Bartlett, Reeve, and Boiler, who have all fajrly recently arrived in Wellington, will be watched with interest, and McLoughlin, the ex-Otago representative, and Bourgeois, from Wanganui, can be depended upon to put up a good showing. Though it is well on in the season, the club's A team has not yet sorted itself out, and to-morrow’s race should materially assist the selection. It will be instructive to compare younger runners like Bruce and Garty with some more seasoned performers such as Foster and Woodley. The latter two are egradually striking form again after a lapse of two or three seasons. The Cup itself has an interesting history. Presented in 1928 by Mr. and Airs AV. J. Jorgensen, it bears the name of a racehorse, Tanadees, once owned by Mr. Jorgeiisen, This horse had a notable racing career, winning the Auckland Gold Cup on one occasion. AVellington B Grade Championship. There will be only a small field in the five-mile event for (he AA’ellington B grade championship, as many of the club members have disqualified themselves during the past few years. The rules state that the race is open only to members who have not at any time finished in the first four of the A team in the provincial championships, have not won an inter-club race, and have not won the B grade championship.before. The winner will hold the Edwards challenge shield for a year. T. Strong and AV. Allan are runners whose performances will be worth watching. Methodist Runners at Auckland. Meeting the AVesley club at -Auckland, the AVellington Methodist Harrier Club gave a sound display. The course of rather under seven miles was very heavy going, especially in the muddy portions, and the AVellington runners showed consistent form in filling five of the first six places, F. Thorley and J. McKinney, who finished first- and second, have been running well throughout the season.
University Championships. With Wellington as the venue of the forthcoming New Zealand University championships, the problem of finding a suitable course arises. AVith restrictions as they are at present the course at Lyall Bay cun be little more than n road race. On the other hand, the Hutt Bark course is in many ways admirable for the purpose. A two-lap six and a quarter mile race could be run over good country with the added advantage that spectators from the grandstand could see almost the entire race. Little difficulty should be experienced in securing permission to cross the new reclamation —the Government believes in encouraging sport in every way. and it is the Government that is carrying out the reclamation work.
