Major River Scheme AVAILABLE IN FEW WEEKS The statement was made to an Upper Hutt deputation which waited on the office of the Secretary of Employment yesterday regarding land erosion by the Hutt River that a major scheme of protection for the river from Maoribank to the railway bridge at Silverstream was in the course of preparation and would probably be available in a few weeks, said the mayor of Upper Hutt, Mr. A. J. .McCurdy, to “The Dominion’’ last night. Mr. McCurdy said the Waiwetu Golf Club wanted the council to make available to it for the purpose of protection work some of the 20 men which had been allocated to the borough under the off-season scheme in which the .Government paid £4 a week per man in wages. The deputation had sought the necessary permission to comply with such a request and would be notified in due course.

Croquet Club Bridge Party. An enjoyable bridge party, at which Mesdames Hendry and Jenness were hostesses. took place in the Hutt Croquet Club pavilion on Tuesday afternoon. The prize-winners were Mrs. J. Wood, highest number, and Mrs. King, hidden number. Those present were Mesdames Bryan. Webley, Stonehouse, Maunder. Brooks, Bonner, Rowe, Somerville, Warburton, R. V. King, Passmore, Kelly. Mount, J. Wood, Nicholls, and Miss 11. Maeaskiil.

Social Afternoon. Mrs. F. Jenness's drawing-room was filled when Mesdaiues W. j. Eddie, W. Hall, and G. C. Heap entertained about GO women at a social afternoon in aid of the forthcoming bazaar of the Lower Hutt Methodist Women’s Guild. Flowers and a log fire were in happy contrast to the wintry conditions outside. Songs were given by Mesdames Stedman, F. Potter, and A, Johnston, and a vocal duet by Mrs. Paton ~ and Mrs. . W. Schmidt. Mrs. D. Steven and Mrs. T. Paton were the accompanists. The children's contribution to the entertainment was much enjoyed. Shirley, Betty, ami Dorothy Jenness and Rex Steven recited. Competitions were won by Mrs. W. T. Strand. Mrs. F. Potter, and Miss R. Cameron.
