ART RESTORED BY ART

Wanganui Man’s Work GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S MEZZOTINTS Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, July 24. Almost obliterated by stains and mildew, four valuable and old mezzotint engravings owned by his Excellency the Governor-General, Lord Galway, were sent recently to Mr. 11. Newrick, custodian of the Sarjeant. Art Gallery, Wanganui, for restoration. This work is now practically completed, and the true beauty of the prints whicli had been lost for many years has been revealed by his expert craftsmanship. \

The engravings depict historical figures, two of whom are Sir Nathaniel Dance (by I. R. Smith), and the Earl of Pembroke and Montgomery (1772). The other two engravings are by Sir Joshua Reynolds, the subjects being unknown. The four engravings will be replaced in their black and gold Hogarth frames when fully restored, and will be exhibited later at the National Art Gallery, Wellington. Mr. Newrick is one of the few experts in this class of work in the Dominion. lu fact, he is the only holder in New Zealand of a certificate showing his competence in this and other phases of art. It was he who restored the complete collection of Chevalier water-colour drawings. This collection comprised 147 glimpses of New Zealand and for a number of years was housed in the Sarjeant Gallery. The drawings were transferred to the National Art Gallery recently. A fine portrait' of Shelley, the poet, done in oils, is also occupying the attention of Mr. Newrick at present. This painting was damaged considerably in bhe Napier earthquake in 1931, the canvas being torn by falling bricks. Already he has repaired the damage so well'that only the closest scrutiny of the picture could reveal any trace of restoration.

A fine panoramic view of a southern lake, painted in oils by Nicholas Chevalier, in 1863, was also restored . by Mr. Newrick recently. The owners this picture had gone to work on it with a scrubbing-brush before he undertook to repair and restore it to its original appearance. '
